What is Commencement?

Commencement is the Highlands graduation ceremony hosted by the university.

When is Commencement?

Saturday, May 10, 2014 at 2 p.m., John A. Wilson Complex on the Highlands campus. Contact your local center for center commencement information.

How long does it last?

The commencement ceremony lasts approximately 2 hours.

How do I participate?

All students must be cleared by the Office of the Registrar prior to participation in commencement. For more information, visit the Graduates Undergraduates page.

Will I be recognized individually?

All graduates will process across the stage to be recognized individually and will be given a diploma cover. Diplomas will not be given out at the ceremony, they will be ready approximately six to eight weeks after graduation and mailed to the address listed on your application for degree.

Am I eligible to participate?

Students must submit an application for degree to the Office of the Registrar no later than March 14, 2014. This will generate the final degree check to determine eligibility to participate. 

Where do I get my cap & gown?

Cap and gown is required in order to participate in the commencement ceremonies and can be purchased at www.cbgrad.com. Academic regalia is required for all participants and cannot be modified or altered in any way. Master's degree candidates must purchase a hood as part of their academic regalia. For further information, contact the Highlands Bookstore at 505.454.3598 or your designated center personnel.

On which side does my tassel go?

Before graduating, the tassel should be on your right. After graduating, it should be moved to the left. Master's candidates should wear their tassels on the left side.

Where do I go for processional line up?

Line up for main campus commencement attendees will start at 1:30 p.m. at the John A. Wilson complex on main campus. Name cards for the ceremony must be picked up at the northwest door on the first floor of the John A. Wilson Complex, starting at 12:15 p.m. prior to line up.

Will my name appear in the program?

Students names will appear in the program as it appears on their application for degree, as long as your application for degree is received by March 14, 2014.

Will there be a rehearsal?

There will be a rehearsal for students taking part in the main campus commencement ceremonies on Friday, May 9, 2014, at 3 p.m. in the John A. Wilson Complex. For more information regarding rehearsal at any of the Highlands centers, students should contact the center directly.

How will I know if I am receiving graduation honors?

Graduation honors are only for undergraduate students. All students receiving graduation honors will be notified by the Office of the Registrar via email. Students may contact the main campus Bookstore to order an honor cord.

Will my friends and family need to purchase tickets to attend the commencement exercises?

Tickets are not required for guests to attend the commencement ceremonies.

What is Phi Kappa Phi?

Phi Kappa Phi is an academic honor society dedicated to the recognition and promotion of academic excellence in all fields of higher education.

How will I know if I am inducted to Phi Kappa Phi?

Those students who are inducted into Phi Kappa Phi will be notified by the Phi Kappa Phi faculty, not by the Office of the Registrar.
