Estimated Costs for Attending Highlands University

Note: This is an estimation of costs while attending NMHU. Actual costs will vary from student to student, depending on individual situations.

The cost of attendance is considered in awarding Pell Grant and other sources of financial aid and scholarships. It is calculated each year after the cost of tuition, fees, room, and board rates are set by the university. The following items are considered in the cost of attendance:
  • Tuition/Fees
  • Books/Supplies
  • Room/Board
  • Personal Expenses
  • Transportation
Every three years, the Financial Aid Office conducts a student survey to determine increases to this cost of attendance. In the years the survey is not conducted, a cost of living adjustment may be made to the previous year’s cost of attendance.

A one-time computer budget adjustment is also allowed. The student must bring receipts or three estimates to the Financial Aid Office along with a request to increase their budget for the purchase of the computer. The purchase must be made within the academic year in order to be considered as an increase to the cost of attendance.
Other adjustments to the Cost of Attendance (or budget) may be considered for dependent care expenses that a student may incur (must be out-of-pocket and not subsidized or covered by any state assistance program). See a Financial Aid Advisor for more information.

How a Total Financial Aid Package is Determined

From the cost of attendance, your Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) is subtracted, yielding a figure for unmet need. That EFC is what drives all grant awarding. The Financial Aid Office creates an individualized student aid package based on that need. Scholarships, grants, loans, and Work-Study are used to address your unmet need. You will not receive more than what has been calculated as your need. Also, be aware that more than one award for tuition, for instance, is not allowed.
