STUDIES AND RESULTS:No empirical studies have been conducted at this point as we are awaiting NIH-RIMI approval to proceed with data collection. The following procedural infrastructure, however, has been established: CYFD’s Central Intake will conduct a series of computer queries to help identify cases—legal cases involving removal of children as a result of methamphetamine manufacturing or use. The computer printout will be cross-correlated with Clandestine Lab Report provided by the Department of Public Safety. Appointments will be established with respective County Office Managers to collect/ transcribe data.
The researcher will assigned a unique number to protect confidentiality and will transcribe data onto a coding sheet. No names or other identifying information will be used and no client records will be removed from the office. For comparison purposes, the same procedure will be used to obtain data from cases in which the state has custody for reasons other than methamphetamine exposure.
Data will be compiled, entered stored electronically, and analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). Qualitative data (e.g., caseworker narrative) will be analyzed using N6 In-Vivo Software. Back-up copies of the data (anonymous format) will be made available to CYFD Cabinet Secretary Dorian Dodson as well as to the Office of the Lieutenant Governor.
SIGNIFICANCEThis research will provide state government with a comprehensive understanding of the medical, developmental, and placement issues faced by methamphetamine-exposed children; and how these children differ from other children in protective custody. Such findings are of importance to the network of pediatricians, social workers, foster parents, health care workers, and law enforcement agents working collaboratively with CYFD to address the methamphetamine problem in New Mexico.
