Master of Arts in English (M.A.)

Students should consult with the director of graduate studies in English prior to registration each term for advisement. During the first meeting, the director and student will develop a long-term plan for completing the program.

Concentration in Creative Writing

Students must take nine credits in creative writing courses, including at least three credits of Engl 671: Creative Writing Workshop. This course may be repeated with a change of content. Creative writers may choose an additional 12 credits of electives from either of the first two emphasis areas.

Examinations

All students must pass a written qualifying examination based on a reading list approved by the Master of Arts Committee. Language Requirement in addition to the 36 credits required for the M.A., students must demonstrate reading knowledge of a language other than English. The language requirement may be fulfilled by: (1) completing the final course of a four semester undergraduate sequence in a language with a grade of “B”; (2) completing a 300- or 400- level course with a grade of “B”; (3) passing the Princeton language test; or (4) passing a comparable test administered by the Department of Humanities.
