The Music programs at Highlands offer a variety of options for students with interests in teaching and preprofessional careers in music.
Students wishing to pursue in-depth studies in music may decide on the Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) Vocal Performance or Music Composition. The B.F.A. concentrations are appropriate for students seeking opportunities in graduate studies and professional music careers.
Students interested in instrumental performance may also pursue the B.A. in Music, as it is the foundation of all Highlands music programs. In addition to the B.A., students may follow the Concentration in Music Education, which prepares graduates for licensure as K-12 music teachers in New Mexico and surrounding regions.
Minors in General Music and in Music Technology and Composition are offered exclusively to non-music majors. The minor in general music is designed for students who have a passion for music, supplementing their principal studies. The music minor programs provide opportunities for musical training in conjunction with a variety of major programs such as business, media arts, and literature.
Choral and instrumental ensembles provide students with opportunities for public performance, including Concert Choir, Madrigal Choir, HU Singers, Music Theater, Marching Band, Pep Band, Guitar Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, and Mariachi. Other ensembles such as Jazz Choir and Chamber Orchestra are offered according to student interest.
Scholarship opportunities include activity awards and the Lorraine Schula, Thomas Mishler, and Lorenzo Miguel Gallegos Scholarships.
"Students in the music program become proficient in their field of study, acquiring a thorough knowledge of the philosophy, aesthetics, literature, and history of Western Art Music."
