English and Philosophy
New Mexico Highlands' Department of English and Philosophy offers a bachelor of arts and a master of arts in English and minors in English, Philosophy and professional writing.
The Department offers the only B.A. and M.A. programs in English in the context of the large and culturally diverse region of Northern New Mexico. In conjunction with the Highlands School of Education, the department offers the only English secondary education teacher training program in the region. The department serves the entire university with the Writing Center and the significant role of the composition program in the general education curriculum. The department’s faculty pursue productive research patterns that generally exceed what one might expect to find at a small university.
Philosophy involves critical and reflective thinking about beliefs, values, and modes of knowledge. Our program offers courses for students of all disciplines in such areas as critical thinking, ethics, art and aesthetics, and philosophy of science.
English ProgramsM.A. English: The M.A. in English offers advanced instruction in literature, linguistics, rhetoric, and composition by providing a sound foundation in advanced research methods for the study of English; thorough background in the history and development of the English language; current theories in linguistics, literary criticism, and writing; and a variety of electives in three emphasis areas: (1) literature; (2) language, rhetoric, and composition; and (3) creative writing.
B.A. in English: The English major provides a broad background in literary periods and genres, as well as intensive study of major authors and literary theories. Students take a combination of courses in British, American, and world literature and may also choose a variety of electives in creative writing, rhetoric, professional writing, and linguistics.
Minor in English: The general English minor is devised for those students who enjoy literary studies and creative writing. No matter what you're majoring in, it can be fun to study literature and write creatively as a welcome change from highly technical subjects or as an excellent complement to majors in other fields of the humanities, fine arts, and social sciences.
Minor in professional writing: Students majoring in any discipline might want to consider the professional writing minor, since employers are constantly looking for candidates with writing skills. This minor offers courses in creative writing, technical writing, linguistics, composition, rhetoric, and journalism, as well as practicum credit for various writing jobs throughout the university and the region.
Minor in religious studies: The religious studies minor offers course in religion and mythology from several disciplines: philosophy, psychology, history, anthropology, art, music, Spanish, and English.
Minor in cognitive science: This interdisciplinary minor, combining courses from philosophy, linguistics, psychology, sociology, mathematics, and computer science, studies mental processes, such as consciousness, perception, logic, artificial intelligence, the nature of language, and the processing of information.
