Sorority Raises $2,300 for Autism Charity

New Mexico Highlands’ Nu Eta sorority raised $2,300 for an autism charity April 18 during a fundraiser walk.

Nearly 150 people joined members of the sorority for a walk benefiting Autism Speaks in Perkins Stadium, and several others made financial donations. Autism affects one in every 110 children and one in every 70 boys. This is the fastest growing serious developmental disability in the U.S.

Highlands Recognizes Employees

New Mexico Highlands University honored its faculty and staff April 15 at a breakfast on the main campus.

“We’ve come a long way in the past few years, and it’s because of everyone’s individual efforts,” Highlands President James Fries told the more than 200 Highlands employees at the event.

NMHU Graduate Senate Sponsors Debate April 22 for Sheriff, Magistrate Judge Candidates

The New Mexico Highlands University Graduate Student Senate will sponsor a debate April 22 at 5:30 p.m. for the San Miguel County sheriff and magistrate judge candidates.

The public debate will be in the university’s Donnelly Library, 802 National Ave., in the G35 lecture hall.

The moderator for the debate will be David Giuliani, managing editor for the Las Vegas Optic.

Highlands Stable Isotopes Signs Distribution Deal with Sigma-Aldrich

The Highlands Stable Isotopes Corp., a licensee of Highlands University, signed an agreement with Sigma-Aldrich, a leading chemical distributor, to exclusively distribute a novel set of patented stable isotope labeled synthetic reagents.

Rudy Martinez, lead scientist for Highlands Stable Isotopes Corp. and principal author of this next generation of patented, labeled synthons, said: "We are pleased to collaborate with Sigma-Aldrich. Because Highlands Stable Isotopes can serve as a hub for biotechnology and other companies, the agreement can bring jobs to this area.”

HU Campus Violence Prevention Program Sponsors ‘Take Back the Night’ April 27

The New Mexico Highlands University Campus Violence Prevention Program will sponsor the university’s first Take Back the Night event April 27 at 7 p.m. as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

The event begins at the university’s Melody Park and includes a march down 11th Street to the corner of National and University Avenues. Organizers hope to make it an annual event.

Take Back the Night will also include information booths staffed by local agencies and organizations who were invited to share information about their resources. In addition, the event features a candlelight vigil and live music by the local band Gil Smith and Company.

April Sexual Assault Awareness Month
The NMHU Campus Violence Prevention Program (CVPP) has created a display in the library showcasing how common sexual assault is. CVPP and the Women’s Center is working to bring awareness to sexual assault and other issues of violence against women such as domestic and dating violence and stalking. If you or someone you know needs more information please contact CVPP at 454-3445.

Celebrate Earth Day at Synergyfest. SynergyFest is April 24 at Melody Park - Music, workshops and kids activities are a part of this family-friendly event. Sponsored by the HU Sustainability Club.

Brown Named RMAC / Rawlings Player of the Week; Cowboys Continue to Climb in National Polls

The #7 NMHU Cowboy Baseball team has excelled in every aspect of the game this season. The Cowboys have climbed the national rankings throughout the season and have also gotten their fourth RMAC / Rawlings Player of the Week this season. Danny Brown has been named the Player of the Week for Week 12 of the RMAC Season.

Brown came through big time for the Cowboys in their weekend series against the Cougars of Colorado Christian University. Brown was instrumental in the Cowboys third straight RMAC series sweep and their fourth RMAC series sweep of the season. Brown finished the weekend with a .400 batting average, three homeruns, scored four runs and eight RBI’s. Brown (4-0) also worked his magic from the mound as he is earned his fourth win of the season. Brown allowed just two runs on seven hits in six innings pitched as well as recorded five strikeouts in the win.

Student Athletes Make Their Mark in the Classroom

The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference has released the names of the student athletes who have been named to the Academic All- RMAC teams and Honor Roll in softball and baseball. To qualify, student-athletes must have a GPA of 3.30 or better, be a starter or reserve, and completed two consecutive semesters or three quarters at their current institution. Graduate students must have earned a 3.30 in their undergrad and graduate classes. The listed GPA is what the student-athletes had earned prior to softball season beginning. RMAC Sports Information Directors at schools that sponsor the sports selected First and Second Team Academic All-RMAC.

Cowgirls Excel on the Track and in the Field

The New Mexico Highlands University Women’s Track and Field Team joined 20 teams from throughout the Rocky Mountain and Great Plains for the Colorado State University-Pueblo Invitational on April 15-17th. Teams from as far north as the Dakotas as well as Wyoming and Nebraska attended the chilly 42 degree meet at the Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl Stadium and Throws complex.

#8 Cowboys Pound Cougars 22-3

The #8 NMHU Cowboys continued their winning way on 4/16 with a 22-3 thrashing of the Colorado Christian University Cougars. The Cowboys dropped the hammer on the Cougars early with a six run first inning and would continue to pile it on en route to their 30th win of the season. With the lopsided win, the Cowboys increase their overall record to 30-6 and the RMAC record to 20-3 on the season. The Cowboys look to complete their fourth RMAC sweep of the season as they conclude their RMAC series with the Cougars with a double header on 4/17 at Runyon Park in Pueblo, Colo.

Las Vegas Alumni Chapter Seeking New Board Members.  We’re looking for volunteers for the Las Vegas Chapter to serve on its board.  If interested, please contact Jim Mandarino at alumni@nmhu.edu.

Homecoming 2010 will be Oct. 1 & Oct 2. Start planning now. Game will be Saturday, October 2. We will be honoring the class of 1960 with an induction of alumni into the Golden Society.

We are looking for volunteers to be Class Agents for Homecoming events for October 1 & 2, 2010. Class agents will work with the Alumni office to provide activities for their class for Homecoming 2010 including making contacts with their peers to provide information and encourage participation.
