NMHU Collegiate License Plates are Here!
We have a limited number of NMHU Collegiate license plates left. Call Sharon Cabellero right away at 505-454-3198 to reserve your number. You'll also need to
go here for the form, and send it to Sharon with your check. The checks and forms have to go through Sharon, otherwise you can get higher numbers if you go directly through the Las Vegas DMV.
Cost is $37 annually of which $25 comes back to the campus for faculty,
staff and campus projects.
If you have any questions call Sharon at 505-454-3198. But don't wait!
She'll need checks and forms to her office by May 7.

HU Singers and Performing Arts Club Present ‘Over the Rainbow’ April 29, 30 and May 1
The New Mexico Highlands University HU Singers and Performing Arts Club present ‘Over the Rainbow’ April 29, 30, and May 1 at 7 p.m. in Ilfeld Auditorium.
The historic Ilfeld Auditorium is at 900 University Ave.
Follow the Yellow Brick Road as the cast presents songs from ‘The Wizard of Oz’, ‘Wicked’ and ‘The Wiz.’ The performance will be a night of lively tunes, fun dance numbers, and lots of drama.
Department of Music choral director Andre Garcia-Nuthmann is the music director for ‘Over the Rainbow,’ and Joseph Chavez is the artistic director. Chavez is an outstanding music student who is graduating this semester.

Archaeology Graduate Students Present Research at Archaeological Society of New Mexico Conference
Five New Mexico Highlands University archaeology graduate students will present their research May 1 at the Archaeological Society of New Mexico annual conference in Santa Fe.
One team of archaeology graduate students are the first to analyze both the skeletal remains and the artifacts of a mysterious skeleton dubbed Urraca Man, found in 1970 in a rock shelter near Urraca Mesa, a rugged area of northeastern New Mexico.
The site is within the 215-square-mile private Philmont Boy Scout Ranch in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Cimarron.

Media Arts Students’ Work Showcased at Museums and the Web Conference
Three New Mexico Highlands University media arts student projects were showcased at the international Museums and the Web Conference April 14 – 17 in Denver.
“Our media arts students were fabulous ambassadors for Highlands University and impressed everyone they interacted with at the conference,” said Miriam Langer, a media arts professor who chairs the university’s Visual and Performing Arts Department.
One student project featured in the Cultural Technology Showcase session at the conference was created for the Marian Koshland Science Museum in Washington, D.C.

Michael Jackson Named Super Student at Student Support Services Annual Banquet
The New Mexico Highlands University Office of Student Support Services recognized numerous outstanding students from the university at its annual awards banquet April 22.
Michael Jackson received the Super Student Award, the highest honor Student Support Services confers. Jackson will graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in media arts and a minor in marketing. He is a familiar face on campus as a student ambassador, homecoming king, and member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity.

Student Prints Selected for University’s Fine Arts Original Print Collection
The work of six New Mexico Highlands University fine arts students was selected April 21 to be purchased for the university’s permanent original fine arts print collection housed in Donnelly Library.
Since 2001, Dr. Robert Bell, a Las Vegas ophthalmologist, has donated original fine arts prints to the university from his own collection. Since 2005, he has purchased more than 100 student prints for the university’s permanent fine arts collection. Dr. Bell also presents a print lecture series each semester at Donnelly Library.

NMHU-Rio Rancho to Honor Student’s Memory With Posthumous Degree
New Mexico Highlands University-Rio Rancho will award a posthumous master’s degree to a student who was killed in an April 6 car accident.
Highlands social work student Kimberly Aragon-Nuñez and her friend Janice Flores were returning from lunch when police say a suspected bank robber fleeing from police crashed into them. Nuñez was killed instantly, and Flores died later.
“Kimberly was taken away from us tragically,” said NMHU-Rio Rancho Center Director Lew Granados. “We wanted to honor her memory and her accomplishments by awarding her a posthumous degree.”

April Sexual Assault Awareness Month
The NMHU Campus Violence Prevention Program (CVPP) has created a display in the library showcasing how common sexual assault is. CVPP and the Women’s Center is working to bring awareness to sexual assault and other issues of violence against women such as domestic and dating violence and stalking. Cowboys Claim RMAC Regular Season Title with 15-8 Win over Mesa State
The #7 NMHU Cowboys dropped RMAC rival Mesa State College on 4/23 by a final score of 15-8. With their 33rd win of the season, the Cowboys claimed the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship for the first time in Head Coach Steve Jones’ 13 year career at the helm of the Cowboy Baseball program. The Cowboys are now 33-6 overall and 23-3 in RMAC play.
“This is such a great year thus far. We have broken a ton of records and this is by far one of my best seasons at NMHU. The guys have done a great job and we will just keep riding this wave. It’s a great feeling to be #1 in the RMAC. This is a testament to our hard work and dedication all season long” said Cowboy Head Coach Steve Jones of his team’s landmark win.

Cowgirls Split with Zias
The Cowgirl Softball team took to the road as they travelled to Portales, NM to take on the Eastern New Mexico Zias in a non conference matchup. The Zias and Cowgirls split in the doubleheader with the Cowgirls losing the first game and then winning the second game.
In game one, the score was close as the Zias won with a score of 1-0. A number of Cowgirls were able to get a hit, going 1-3 at the plate, but were not able to score. It was late in the third inning when the Zias scored. Ashley Paiz was on the mound for the Cowgirls and is now 2-5 on the season.

Cowboys End Spring Drills On a Positive Note
The NMHU Football team concluded their spring practices on 4/24 with their annual Purple vs. Black Scrimmage in Perkins Stadium. The Cowboys had about 200 people show up for the event. Family, friends, alumni and Cowboy Football recruits all showed up for the scrimmage and had a great time. The Cowboys showed great improvement on both sides of the ball. The offense and the defense traded blows throughout the 60 play scrimmage.
“I’m very pleased with how our spring ball went. Both sides of the ball grew throughout and we finished on a great note heading into the summer” said NMHU Head Coach Chad Roanhaus of his Cowboys spring practices.

Cowgirls Stun ThunderWolves
The NMHU Cowgirl softball team proved they are a top team as they faced the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves, who are currently number one in the RMAC West Division. The Cowgirls played well as a team and swept the ThunderWolves in the RMAC doubleheader.
Kelsey Groff took to the mound for the Cowgirls in game one. In seven innings pitched, she allowed three earned runs on eight hits. She recorded her season high for strikeouts with 12 on the game. The Cowgirls allowed the ThunderWolves to score seven runs on eight hits.

Homecoming 2010 will be Oct. 1 & Oct 2. Start planning now. Game will be Saturday, October 2. We will be honoring the class of 1960 with an induction of alumni into the Golden Society.
We are looking for volunteers to be Class Agents for Homecoming events for October 1 & 2, 2010. Class agents will work with the Alumni office to provide activities for their class for Homecoming 2010 including making contacts with their peers to provide information and encourage participation.
