Department of Music Presents Mozart’s First Opera in Dinner Theater at Plaza Hotel July 7, 8
The New Mexico Highlands University Department of Music presents Mozart’s first opera in a dinner theater July 7 and 8 at the historic Plaza Hotel on the Old Town Las Vegas Plaza.
The dinner theater is a benefit for the Department of Music choral program. It will be in the hotel’s elegant ballroom in the Ilfeld expansion of the hotel, which opened in 2009 after historical restoration.
The dinner theater performance features Mozart’s one-act comic opera, Bastien und Bastienne, composed in 1768.

Free Computer Science Camp for Youth, Teachers at Highlands June 28 – July 2
New Mexico Highlands University is partnering with two science education programs to host a free computer science camp for local youth and teachers on the university’s campus June 28 – July 2.
Presenting the “Summer Round Up!” science camp are Project GUTS, Growing Up Thinking Scientifically, and the Supercomputing Challenge. The camp at Highlands is one of many scheduled this summer throughout the state.
During this free camp, middle and high school students will learn about how scientists and others use computer modeling in cutting-edge research. Climate change is the focus of the exercises this year.

Thomasinia Ortiz-Gallegos Awarded Scholarship for Academic Advising Institute in Philadelphia
Thomasinia Ortiz-Gallegos, director of Academic Support Services for New Mexico Highlands University, received a scholarship to attend the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Summer Institute in Philadelphia June 27 – July 2.
Ortiz-Gallegos competed with applicants nationwide for the scholarship and was one of only 11 selected for the honor.
The NACADA is the only national association for academic advisement in higher education. This year’s summer institute focuses on retention.

$1 Million Lottie Wood Washburn Endowment Established for NMHU Foundation
Longtime teacher Lottie Wood Washburn’s educational legacy continues through a $1 million endowment her son, Beverly W. Washburn, established with the New Mexico Highlands University Foundation.
The endowment is the largest single donation ever made to the university.
Each year, the Lottie Wood Washburn Endowment is expected to fund $50,000 in scholarships for residents in and around Raton, Wagon Mound, and the former coal camps of Sugarite and Van Houten, who attend Highlands University. The university opened a center in Raton spring semester 2008.

Ilfeld Auditorium presents recently released movies on the big screen. Now in high definition BluRay and surround sound! Cineflix in Ilfeld is a free-of-charge event open to both students and community members.
The student movie club will be selling Roasted Corn w/ choice of soda or water for $3 to help support "Cineflix in Ilfeld", Every Friday in June from 11 - 2pm in front of KEDP radio station (across the street from Ilfeld Auditorium)

Graham Earns Two All-American Honors
NMHU track and field All-American Angella Graham added to her illustrious career by earning two more All-American awards at the 2010 NCAA II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Charlotte, NC May 27-29th. Graham, a senior from Trelawney, Jamaica, placed fifth in the Triple Jump and sixth in the Heptathlon to boost her career All-American trophy haul to seven in her two years as a member of the NMHU program.
Graham once again broke her school record in the Heptathlon at the national meet.—totaling 5,288 points for the grueling two-day event. “Angella has completed five heptathlons in the last two years, “noted HU coach Bob DeVries, “and she has broken the record every single time.” Graham placed seventh at the 2009 championship meet with a score of 5, 026.

Homecoming 2010 will be Oct. 1 & Oct 2. Start planning now. Game will be Saturday, October 2. We will be honoring the class of 1960 with an induction of alumni into the Golden Society.
We are looking for volunteers to be Class Agents for Homecoming events for October 1 & 2, 2010. Class agents will work with the Alumni office to provide activities for their class for Homecoming 2010 including making contacts with their peers to provide information and encourage participation.
