Las Vegas, N.M. – New Mexico Highlands University’s Office of Career Services will host a career and internship fair Nov. 7 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for the university’s students and alumni.

The event will be in the ballroom of the university’s Student Union Building at the northwest corner of National Avenue and 8th Street.

Approximately 25 employers ranging from Fortune 500 companies to federal and state agencies will participate. A number of the recruiters are Highlands University alumni who are motivated to hire and mentor future alumni.

Two local examples include former student body president and alumnus Chris Burns, who is a recruiter for Alta Vista Regional Hospital, and Las Vegas City Manager Tim Dodge, another Highlands University alumnus. At the state level, alumnus Toby Velasquez is an administrator for the New Mexico State Parks Division.

“This is a great opportunity for students to explore careers, paid summer internships, and graduate school programs like the UNM Law School,” said Ron Garcia, director of Career Services. “Bring your resumes and dress to impress. Business casual attire is expected.”

Garcia said the career and internship fair also provides opportunities to network with professionals in your field and seek job search advice from the experts.

“The career fair offers an excellent opportunity for students and alumni to develop their networking skills, which are absolutely essential in today’s job market. The more you network, the more comfortable and effective you become. Today, it’s not just what you know or who you know, it’s who you get to know,” Garcia said.

He added that in past career fairs, employers have given excellent feedback about the high quality of preparedness Highlands University students possess.
