Abused and neglected children come from troubled homes
- 446 screened and accepted reports of abuse and/or neglect were received from San Miguel, Mora and Guadalupe counties in 2004; 145 children were in foster care because their homes were not safe places for them to live.
- 66% have parents with substance abuse problems; 12% were born drug and/or alcohol affected
- 53% are affected by domestic violence; 79% have been diagnosed with behavioral and/or emotional problems.
- Many of these problems are multi-generational

CASA volunteers have saved New Mexico millions of dollars by helping to shorten the time children spend in foster care, mental health care, and psychiatric placement.
