Clubs & Organizations
NMHU encourages students to look beyond the classroom. The office of Campus Life oversees several clubs and organizations that are established by students. Each club represents a unique interest, both educational and academic in nature. Every chartered club and organization is open to all NMHU students.

Interested in chartering a club/organization?
All chartered clubs/organizations must (re)apply to the Office of Campus Life during the fall semester (no later than September 15th) of each school year to be officially recognized by the university. Chartering of a new club/organization may take place at any time. Individuals wishing to (re) apply for a chartered status must submit a Charter Application Form to the office of Campus Life by the aforesaid deadline. Prior to applying for a chartered status with the university, all clubs are urged to read the Clubs Handbook. The office of Campus Life invites any questions and/or comments by club members and/or faculty advisors about the application process. |
Funding resources
Because all NMHU clubs/organizations are comprised of students, the university is sensitive to the need for financial resources needed to carry out the mission and goals of each group. As such, the office of Campus Life and the Associated Students of New Mexico Highlands University (Student Senate) has established funds for allocation upon request and approval. In order to receive Student Senate funding, respective clubs must contact a student senator to sponsor a bill that is then presented to the whole senate. Allocations are subject to approval by a majority vote. |
How To Write A Bill
Make sure to follow correct outline of the Sample Bill, and retrieve a budget summary similar to the example of Bill shown.
- All Bills, and Resolutions involving an allocation of Funds must be turned into the Treasurer's box in hardcopy by the Wednesday prior to a regular ASNMHU meeting @ 5:00pm, in order to be considered for that meeting's agenda.
- The Finance & Appropriations Committee will inform the Senator/s sponsoring a bill or resolution prior to the ASNMHU meeting, if there are any further question or problems with the bill/resolution.
- Thereafter it is the sponsor's (senator) responsibility to contact the club or organization, in case the particular bill/resolution was tabled in the Finance & Appropriations Committee.
- If the bill passed through Committee, it is also the sponsor's responsibility to make sure the club/organization knows that one of their members has to be present at the ASNMHU meeting when the bill/resolution will be discussed (If there is no member of the club/organization present at the meeting, the Finance & Appropriations Committee will recommend for the bill/resolution to be tabled).
- Copies of the bill/resolution and budget summary will be made available to each ASNMHU member in their boxes prior to the ASNMHU meeting when the bill/resolution will be discussed.
- Bill/Resolution sponsors (Senators) have to make sure clubs/organizations know about the timeframe, when to expect approved funds from ASNMHU, since Check Requests have to clear about three more offices after the ASNMHU office.
- The ASNMHU President has the option to veto any Bill/Resolution, which passed through Senate. If the Bill/Resolution got approved by the Senate, the ASNMHU Treasurer, and finally by the ASNMHU President, funds can be picked up by the Club/Organization Advisor at the "Cage" in the Administration Bldg. about two weeks after the ASNMHU meeting when the funds were approved.
- If there are any further questions, feel free to contact the ASNMHU Treasurer or any other Finance & Appropriations Committee members.

Fundraising
As the number of clubs and organizations on campus increase, it becomes difficult for the university to allocate adequate resources evenly among the many deserving efforts of chartered clubs and organizations. Though “start up” resources are available, the office of Campus life urges all NMHU Clubs and organizations to fundraise for additional financial resources. The office of Campus Life invites inquiries about which upcoming events could serve as opportunities for fundraising, as well as the forms needed to organize an on campus fundraising event. |
