Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Is There Something I Should Know : Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction syndrome also known as chronic fatigue syndrome, CFS, as well as many other names, is a complex and debilitating chronic illness that affects the brain and multiple body systems.

CFS is characterized by incapacitating fatigue and problems with concentration and short-term memory. The person may have flu-like symptoms such as pain in the joints and muscles, sleep that does not seem to restore energy, tender lymph nodes, sore throat and headache. The individual experiences a period of profound fatigue that follows mental or physical activity and requires twenty-four hours (or longer) to recover.
Symptoms vary from person to person and fluctuate in severity. Specific symptoms may come and go, complicating treatment and the individual’s ability to cope with the illness. Most symptoms are invisible, which makes it difficult for others to understand the vast array of debilitating symptoms with which the person has to live with.

If you want to discuss your feelings, call the Counselor at New Mexico Highlands University at 454-3478.
