How do I register for Cowboy Orientation?
If you have received your Cowboy Orientation packet in the mail, fill out the reservation form inside and mail it to our office. You may also fax it or walk it in to our office. The reservation form is also available online. back to top |
Is it faster if I walk my reservation form in, mail it, or reserve a space online?
Cowboy Orientation reservation forms are processed on a first-come, first-serve basis. Mailing the brochure only delays the process by a few days. back to top |
Is there a fee to attend Cowboy Orientation?
NO. The Cowboy Orientation is the only orientation that does not charge a fee to our perspective students. back to top |
What do I need to bring with me to orientation?
Here is what you will need:
- Backpack to carry your Cowboy Orientation materials
- Photo ID (e.g., driver's license)
- Comfortable walking shoes and warm clothing (Rooms are air conditioned and can get very cool.)
- Parking is free is accessible in various parking lots located closely to our central meeting location.
- Transfer students should bring copies of his/her transcripts.
- Copies of Placement Exam Scores.
- Financial Aid and Scholarship award letters.

Why is Cowboy Orientation mandatory?
Cowboy Orientation is mandatory because we want you to succeed. Research strongly suggests that if you attend orientation, you are more likely to achieve success in college and GRADUATE. New Mexico Highlands University is committed to helping you succeed – both in and out of the classroom. Cowboy Orientation is mandatory for all incoming freshmen and strongly encouraged for all transfer students. back to top |
Is it required that my parents attend?
It is not required for your parents and/ or other family members to attend Cowboy Orientation. However, we strongly recommend it. They would attend a separate concurrent program on the same day of the student’s orientation. back to top |
What is a Compass exam?
The Compass exam provides information for placement into courses will be based on your ACT or SAT scores or transfer credit. To get directions to the Testing Center or more information about the Compass exam, call 505-454-3252.
Due to limited time at Cowboy Orientation, you need to make arrangements with the Testing Center to take placement exams before you will be allowed to register for your classes. back to top |
