First Year Experience


Want to have a great time in college while getting ahead? New Mexico Highlands University’s First Year Experience and Learning Communities are for you. Meet new friends with the same interests as you with New Mexico Highlands’ Learning Communities. Check out some of the communities in listed, then talk to your academic adviser, who will get you going. Aim for the A’s and develop better skills for college and life through New Mexico Highlands’ First Year Experience Course. The course is required for all first-year students. Talk to your academic adviser for more information on the First Year Experience Course

The "Fine Art of Success" Learning Community, will embrace the essence of visual literacy as students learn to appreciate the world of fine arts.

MineraLOGIC: building blocks of earth;foundations of society    
This learning community will combine qualitative mineralogy (scientific observations) with quantitative logic to appreciate the Earth's mineral resources and how they influence our health, security, well being, and society.
The Meaning of Life   
The Biology Learning Community is designed for those students (non-scientists) interested in gaining insight into the miraculous workings of living things.

This learning community will examine the theories behind our individual differences while examining human nature and how all people are similar to one another.

What's up, Doc?
Do you want to be a doctor, veterinarian, pharmacist, dentist, or Ph.D.? Students in this community are committed and passionate about the rigorous academics required to be
a "Doc". Become part of the Medical Professionals Community.

What's the Matter?
Chemistry is the science concerned with the composition, structure, and properties of matter, as well as the changes it undergoes during chemical reactions. In this community,
you will investigate how chemistry affects your everyday life.

School of Rock!    
Music is how feelings sound! Study the basic elements of music. Focus on music in the social, historical and cultural context.

¡Qué Viva!    
For students who want to embrace Spanish Heritage Language by enhancing their knowledge of the culture that surrounds them.


Do the Math    
Uncover the value of math as this community explores the many dimensions of the sciences. Together, students will discover the interdisciplinary strength of entering the fields of math, physics, and computers.

Join other athletes in the development of those strategies that support health promotion through self-responsibility, which will result in an increase in quality of life as well as
athletic performance.
