Hall of Honor Named for Coach Don Gibson

Don Gibson Hall of Honor Dedication

Margaret McKinney/Highlands University

Don Gibson, right, beloved legendary Highlands University football and basketball coach, greets former player James Lott at the dedication of the Coach Don Gibson H-Club Athletic Hall of Honor Oct. 17. Gibson is known for both his stellar success as a football and basketball coach in the 1950s and 60s and for the profound positive impact he had on his players. Gibson was also a visionary leader who recruited the first African American athletes to the university and advocated fiercely for their equal treatment in a time before desegregation swept the nation. The hall of honor celebrates the proud tradition of exceptional HU athletes through framed photographs, championship banners, and more. It is located in the lobby of the Stu Clark Building across from Perkins Stadium. Gibson is the parade marshal for the homecoming parade Oct. 19 at 10 a.m., with the Cowboys taking on Adams State at 6 p.m.
