Anthropology & Archaeology

About
Highlands’ first president, Dr. Edgar Lee Hewett, was a prominent archaeologist known for bringing about the federal Antiquities Act, the establishment of Bandelier National Monument, the Chaco Culture National Historical Park, the Museum of New Mexico, and the School of American Research in Santa Fe.

More than 100 years later, Highlands University’s anthropology program is one of the region’s strongest.  We offer a bachelor of arts in anthropology and sociology and a master of arts in Southwest studies with concentrations in archeology, cultural anthropology, forensic anthropology, or physical anthropology.  Each summer, we offer exciting archaeological field schools where students investigate ancient Native cultures, including a possible Paleo-Indian mammoth kill site, and forensic archaeology students recover human remains at a mock death scene located high on an isolated mesa.

Job Prospects
Many of our anthropology and Southwest Studies Program graduates are in successful and rewarding careers in the USDA Forest Service, museums, wildlife agencies and private cultural resource management companies.  Others have been accepted into prestigious Ph.D. programs across the country.

Highlands is a great place to study anthropology and archaeology!
We attribute the success of our students to a combination of hands-on experience using current industry technology, our emphasis on best field practices, and our unique location that combines Native, Hispanic and European cultures. Through our partnerships with various agencies and private landowners, anthropology students have access to more than one million acres of land for exciting field research.
