Regarding Self describes a body of sculpture I have worked on for several years. In a politically charged society where traditions continue I investigate the female position in domestic, academic and social systems. I am interested in imagery that is historically traditional and often personal and its implementation in the present time. It is through creation and existence that I encounter substantial factual communication with my subconscious and consider how my reality is affected by environment and experience. I honor the truth of this language and exorcism, which externalizes and presents questions of memory, identity, daily practice and experience in a more concrete fashion than I could otherwise achieve.
The Deluge Series is a parallel body of work with my husband Mark Guilbeau. These collaborations are a means of developing a visual language that allows our combined commentary on social and political issues affecting us. Through the installations we emphasize the processes by which the global community is being developed. The title and theme of the work is appropriated from a set of drawings created by Leonardo da Vinci. Da Vinci expected the world to end as the result of a catastrophic natural disaster, most probably a flood. The deluge we investigate is not a natural disaster induced by torrential rains and swelling rivers, but the equally disastrous ramifications of the self-inflicted borage of human over-production and global consumption.
Regarding my choices of technology and material I would say that my decisions are bound with memory and history. I utilize detritus; recycle material with implied associative meaning and image to pay tribute to human ingenuity, the power of nature and my own role in all. The manner ranges from conceptual, environmental, site specific, temporal, and permanent in compositions as varied as performance, drawing, installation and sculpture. |
