Come to one or more of the discussion groups to talk about True Grit! See below for book discussion dates, times and locations.

Wednesday, February 26, 2020 from 12 to 1 p.m.
Book Discussion at Carnegie Public Library, 500 National Avenue, Las Vegas, NM 87701: The discussion will be led by Highlands Assistant Professor of English Lauren Fath and Carnegie Library staff.

Thursday, February  27, 2020 from 6 to 7 p.m.
Book Discussion at Donnelly Library, 802 National Avenue, Las Vegas, NM 87701: This discussion will be led by Highlands Assistant Professor of Languages & Culture Eric Romero, and is the first meeting of Donnelly’s spring 2020 scholar-led reading series, True Grit, True Culture, True Place.

Little Read Story Times

Wednesday, February 19, 2020 from 10 to 11  a.m. and from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.; Saturday, February 22, 2020 from 10 to 11 a.m.
Story time at Carnegie Public Library in the Children’s Area. The book and following craft will tie in to the Western themes of the Big Read book True Grit. The story time will be offered at the times and dates listed above at the Carnegie Public Library, located at 500 National Avenue.

 

Cowboy Tea

Saturday, March 7, 2020 from 2 to 4 p.m.
Kennedy Alumni Hall, New Mexico Highlands University, 905 University Avenue, Las Vegas, NM 87701. The Highlands University Alumni Office will host a family-oriented tea with cowboy-themed arts and crafts projects, a photo booth, and more.

 

Film Screenings

Wednesday, March 4, 2020 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Ilfeld Auditorium, New Mexico Highlands University, 900 University Avenue, Las Vegas, NM 87701. Screening of the 2010 film True Grit, directed by the Coen brothers, starring Hailee Steinfeld and Jeff Bridges.

Past Events

The Big Read kick-off features a performance by legendary Las Vegas cowboy sculptor and poet Duke Sundt at the Highlands Student Center Ballroom, 800 National Ave., from 5 to 7 p.m on Friday, February 7, 2020. The performance will also be available via zoom: https://nmhu.zoom.us/j/415190249

Highlands President Sam Minner will welcome the community, and there will be refreshments and cowboy-themed activities.

Also on Feb. 7, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Student Center Theater, Highlands will show a free screening of the John Wayne film version of True Grit, a 1969 blockbuster Old Western. There programs are free and open to the public.
