Historical Records Preservation Workshop March 8

2/26/2012

Las Vegas, N.M. – New Mexico Highlands University will present a workshop on preserving your historical documents March 8 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. in the Margaret Kennedy Alumni Hall, 905 University Ave.

The university’s Office of Research and Sponsored Projects and the university’s Thomas C. Donnelly Library are sponsoring the public workshop, which was rescheduled from Dec. 8 due to a winter storm.

Participants will learn the basics of how to care for and store historical records.

“People often find historical photos, diaries, and other family documents in their attics,” said Cheryl Zebrowski, an assistant librarian at Donnelly Library who heads the Cataloguing/Systems Division. “This workshop will give them a chance to learn how to preserve these family treasures.”

Zebrowski said the workshop is also of special interest to librarians.

“At Highlands, we wanted to improve our knowledge of preserving fragile historical documents in our own library, like the Beisman Collection of local maps that was donated to Donnelly,” Zebrowski said.

Rebecca Elder, a well-known expert on conserving library and archival materials, will present the workshop. She is the field preservation services officer for Amigos Library Services, a nonprofit based in Dallas.

Elder holds a master’s degree in library science, with advanced training in preserving historical documents from the University of Texas, Austin, Harvard University, and the Smithsonian.

Some of the topics for the workshop include:

• Overview of what causes deterioration of historical records.

• How to select folders, boxes and other materials to house records.

• Cataloguing and processing archives.

• Storing oversized materials, maps and photographs.

• Proper handling and exhibition practices.

• Basic paper repair techniques.

• Developing guidelines, practices and policies for archival holdings.

For the public, the workshop fee is $50, and participants may pay on March 8. The workshop is free for Highlands University faculty, staff and students with ID.

Space is limited and early online registration is encouraged at www.tinyurl.com/NMHighlandsPreservation
