Letter From the President

On behalf of our faculty and staff, I welcome you to New Mexico Highlands University!

You are about to embark on an exciting, rewarding and challenging journey that will truly transform your life.

New Mexico Highlands University is a wise choice for your college plans. Our students and alumni consistently rate Highlands University very high in terms of satisfaction. The reason? Excellent programs, small class sizes led by professors who know you by name, and the most affordable four-year tuition in the Western United States.

New Mexico Highlands University is also one of the most diverse campuses in the country. Enrollment has been growing in recent years with 2,428 students on the main campus last fall plus another 1,323 at our centers in Raton, Farmington, Roswell, Santa Fe/Española, and Rio Rancho/Albuquerque for a total of 3,751 students. Those students represented 42 states, 22 tribes, and 35 countries.  Approximately 71 percent of our students are Hispanic, Native American, or African American; 40 percent are studying at the master’s degree level; and 70 percent of the degrees awarded recently have been to women. Other colleges and universities might talk about diversity. At New Mexico Highlands, it’s real.

I encourage you make the most of your college experience at New Mexico Highlands and explore the many aspects of a university education through participation in student clubs, intramural sports, or one of the many campus-sponsored events scheduled throughout  the year.

Preparing for college can seem just as intimidating at times for parents as it is for students. At New Mexico Highlands University, our faculty, staff and administration are committed to the success of all our students, and we feel almost as much pride as parents when we witness each student’s growth and success.

For many parents, watching a son or daughter leave for college is an emotional time. We’re delighted to watch our children start their paths toward their dreams and goals, but there’s that voice in the back of our mind asking, ‘where did the time go?’ We are proud to see our children live up to new challenges while sometimes wondering, ‘how am I going to afford this?’

We are here for our students, and we are here for their parents. Together, we can make great things happen.

On behalf of the Highlands family, I offer you our sincere welcome.

Jim Fries, President, NMHU
