What's involved in taking an Internet Class?

Highlands extends educational opportunities beyond our main campus and centers by offering Internet-only courses in order to meet the growing needs of nontraditional students throughout  New Mexico and beyond.

We currently use Blackboard to deliver our Internet-only courses and to enhance both ITV and traditional on-site classes.

What you need to get started:
  • A computer with speakers, and access to the Internet.
  • A supported & properly configured browser.  To view supported browsers and configurations go to http://www.webct.com/tuneup.
  • Your Highlands student e-mail username. Note: In case you don't already know your student e-mail username, it will be included in your Distance Education welcome letter.

How to get connected:

  • Click on Blackboard.
  • Click on Login to Blackboard.
  • Click on Login and enter username and password.

Special requirements for your class are listed:

  • In Banner when you register - just click on the course ID for additional information. There might be special hardware, software, field trips, and extra meetings.
  • Or in a "Special Requirements" document on your course homepage in Blackboard.

What's involved in taking an Internet Class?

Taking a class entirely on the Internet is a lot different than taking a traditional course. Instead of meeting your instructor and other students face to face, you get to know them by using Blackboard communication tools, such as Blackboard mail, the discussion board, chat, and student presentations.

  • Course materials should be available at least two weeks before your class starts.
  • Login as soon as possible to get familiar with your class and the Blackboard tools.
  • Be sure to test your browser, check out our FAQs, and try using Blackboard mail and other tools.

Although Highlands’ faculty strives to create the ambience of a traditional classroom, you will have to take the initiative to deal with hardware, software and Internet access issues. In addition, you will have to discipline yourself to attend class regularly and actively participate in class discussions; the longer you wait to get involved, the harder it will be.

This experience will be rewarding and make you more marketable.
