Forget the primaries. Forget Super Tuesday.  The important voting will be in New Mexico Highlands University’s Fine Arts Building.  The top picks in this semester’s student art show, currently on display in Burris Hall’s gallery will be determined by popular vote.  The winners in each category, painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics and jewelry, as well as the best-in-show category will be announced between 4-6 pm on Dec. 5 during the exhibition’s opening.

“We encourage everyone to come to the gallery and vote for their favorite work,” said art professor David Lobdell.

Lobdell said the student art show has been a tradition for several years, and visitor voting on the artwork has taken place for the past ten years.

“New Mexico Highlands has a long tradition in the arts,” Lobdell said.  “We have a good crop of students in this show — they’re interesting people, and they make interesting work.”

Art student McKaila Dorman, a senior, said she’s excited about this semester’s exhibit.  “There’s lots of great work, and it’s getting bigger and bigger every year,” Dorman said.  “The students get very excited about it and take it pretty seriously.  It’s interesting to see how the public sees the work.  Anytime an artist can display their work, it’s pretty exciting. “The Burris Hall gallery is open Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm.
