Students Prepare Thanksgiving Baskets for Families

Students preparing Thanksgiving donations

Margaret McKinney/Highlands

Social work students from left, Dora Molina, Iris Mancera, and Alejandra Roja, prepare turkey dinner baskets Nov. 22 for the first annual Cezar Libiran Thanksgiving Food Drive, named in memory of a social work student who died earlier this semester. The Highlands University Undergraduate Social Work Association organized the food drive, which will feed 65 local families in need a traditional Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings. The students will distribute the baskets to organizations such as West Las Vegas Head Start, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Samaritan House, Ride to Pride, and more. Local businesses like Lowe’s and JC’s New York Pizza made generous donations, with the students also making food contributions. The Undergraduate Social Work Association, comprised of juniors and seniors, was re-chartered this semester and is growing strong, with more than 30 active members. Social work professor Dolores Ortega is the adviser.
