Poetry Slam Against Domestic Violence

August 25, 2017 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

 All Poems performed in competition must be the original work of the performing poet.
 There are no props, music or costumes allowed during poetry performances. Poets may use whatever is on stage and available to all poets while performing (for example, getting on top of a chair is not using a prop as long as all performers have access to it).

 Make it Original: The written piece must be original. The story being performed for competition needs to be your own work.
 Time: Each poet has 3 minutes to perform. While practicing your poem, time yourself to make sure you do not go over the time limit.
 Simple & Relatable: Your poem should be able to reach your audience the first time it’s heard. Read and perform it for family & friends before competing. Ask them what is clear and what is not. Choose themes and subjects that many people can relate to, like Domestic Violence Awareness interpersonal violence issues (dating violence, sexual assault, suicide ideation, stalking, harassment, bullying, consent), healthy-relationships, bystander intervention, politics, religion, insecurity, family-social issues, etc. Your poem should be clear and convey a message.
 Rhythmic & Passionate: Your poem should have a rhythm that shows through your passionate performance. A slam Poem moves the audience through different moods. How the poem is performed is at least as important as the content if not more! (No Pressure)

 There will be one round, competitors perform original poem NOT to exceed 3 minutes.

 At the conclusion of the round, we will finalize the competition by announcing the winner and awarding prizes.

Poems do not have to be memorized but tend to give you an advantage if they are

We celebrate poems, positivity, expression, and creativity. Poor sportsmanship will result in immediate disqualifications.
What are you waiting for? Grab your pens and paper and get your poem on!
