This workshop will define the role that Rite of Passages play in treatment within the Native American and other populations. It will explore the historical relationship between Native Americans and ETOH, the colonial context in which ETOH was employed. We will look at the indigenous sobriety movements throughout history and popular negative cultural and clinical stereotypes of Native Americans. Also examined will be the Dignity Model as it relates to providing treatment to Native Americans and for those working in Tribal agencies, ‘Indian and non’-Indian.
