The Board of Regents of New Mexico Highlands University has approved the renaming of the John A. Wilson Complex to the John A. Wilson Center, modernizing the facility’s designation while continuing to honor one of the University’s most distinguished alumni and benefactors. The Board also approved naming the men’s basketball locker room the Larry “Sal” Nunez Men’s Basketball Locker Room, recognizing a recent gift supporting Highlands students and athletics.
The renaming preserves the legacy of John A. Wilson, a Highlands alumnus, former president of the New Mexico Highlands University Foundation, and nationally recognized business executive whose leadership and service helped advance the University’s mission and growth. Updating the facility descriptor from “Complex” to “Center” more accurately reflects its role as the central home of Highlands basketball and indoor athletics while aligning with contemporary collegiate athletics naming conventions.
“This update honors John A. Wilson’s legacy while ensuring the facility reflects its prominence and role on campus today,” said Neil Woolf, President of New Mexico Highlands University. “It also reflects the ongoing commitment of Highlands alumni and supporters who continue to invest in the success of our students.”
The locker room naming recognizes a major gift from the Estate of Lawrence S. Nunez. At the family’s request, the space will honor Larry “Sal” Nunez, who attended Highlands and was a member of the men’s basketball program in the early 1970s. The gift supports both the University library and the basketball program.
“We are grateful for this meaningful gift, which enhances the experience of our student-athletes and reflects the enduring connection our alumni have to Highlands,” said Scott Noble, Director of Athletics.
Originally constructed in the 1980s and named in Wilson’s honor, the John A. Wilson Center has long served as a cornerstone of campus life, hosting athletics, academic programs, and community events. The updated designation strengthens the University’s institutional presentation and supports ongoing donor engagement that directly benefits Highlands students.
The renaming and locker room dedication will be reflected in campus signage and official references moving forward.
