New Mexico Highlands University will welcome U.S. Senator and Highlands alumnus Ben Ray Luján as the keynote speaker for its 2026 Commencement Ceremony.
The ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at the John A. Wilson Center on the Las Vegas main campus, honoring graduates from across the university as they join a global network of Highlands alumni.
Luján, who has represented New Mexico in the United States Senate since 2021, has built a career centered on expanding opportunity and strengthening communities across the state. Raised in Nambé, a small farming community in northern New Mexico, he has often pointed to the values of hard work, dedication, and perseverance instilled by his family and community as foundational to his path in public service.
A graduate of New Mexico Highlands University, Luján went on to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives and as Assistant Speaker before his election to the Senate. Throughout his career, he has focused on policies that create economic opportunity, expand access to health care, and support working families.
“An elevated future isn’t just an idea here; it’s something our graduates go out and build,” said Dr. Neil Woolf, president of New Mexico Highlands University. “Senator Luján has done exactly that, and his example will resonate with this class as they take their next step.”
In the Senate, Luján has emphasized building a stronger, more secure future for New Mexico and has worked to expand opportunity for communities across the state. His leadership spans issues including economic development, education, infrastructure, and support for rural and tribal communities.
“It is an honor to return to Highlands and celebrate this graduating class,” said Luján. “This university helped shape my journey, and I look forward to sharing a message about perseverance, community, and the responsibility to give back.”
Commencement is one of New Mexico Highlands University’s most significant annual traditions, bringing together students, families, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members to celebrate the achievements of Highlands graduates.
