Alumni Office Oktoberfest Fundraiser October 26

October 15, 2019

Las Vegas, N.M. – The Highlands University Alumni Office is presenting a festive Highlands Oktoberfest fundraiser Oct. 26 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom at 800 National Ave.

“Oktoberfest events are a fun way to celebrate the autumn season in a lighthearted way,” said Juli Salman, alumni affairs director. “This is the first time the Alumni Affairs Office has hosted an event like this.”

Salman said the Oktoberfest will feature traditional German food such as bratwurst sausage, schnitzel, beef sauerbraten, homemade pretzels and dip, hot potato salad, sauerkraut, red cabbage and apples, and other vegetarian options. German chocolate cake will be served for dessert.

“The Skillet Restaurant will be preparing all the food. This is the type of cuisine not readily available in our community, giving people a chance to try something new,” Salman said.

Borracho’s will serve flights, or samplers, of traditional German Oktoberfest beer as well as some German wines.

“The atmosphere will be very festive, decorated with traditional blue and white Oktoberfest pennants and lights and photo cutout booths. Adding to the atmosphere will be a live band, Contrafact, playing traditional German polka music along with other dance favorites,” Salman said.

Salman said there will be polka instructions for those who want to give it a try.

Gifts for all who attend include mini beer steins filled with chocolate.

“While costumes aren’t required, this is your opportunity to pull out your lederhosen if you have some,” Salman said.

Tickets for the Alumni Oktoberfest are $50 each and an RSVP is required. Call 505-454-3248 or email alumni@nmhu.edu

The proceeds from the fundraiser will be used for Highlands University student success initiatives such as scholarships.
