Gary John Tripp was confirmed to the New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) Board of Regents by the New Mexico State Senate on March 7, 2025, following his appointment by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. His term extends through December 31, 2030.

A resident of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, Mr. Tripp is deeply committed to his community and the people of Northern New Mexico. “As a regent, my focus is on expanding access to higher education for all students. Together, we can propel NMHU forward, creating transformative opportunities for individuals who aspire to positively impact their communities, this state, our nation, and the world through education.”

Mr. Tripp brings over 41 years of experience in education, holding numerous roles as a teacher, administrator, and leader throughout New Mexico. His career includes teaching history, civics, and economics at Moriarty Schools, as well as serving as Athletic Director, Assistant Principal, and Principal at both Moriarty and Rio Rancho High Schools. He also served as Executive Director of the New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA), where he championed the growth of student programs statewide.

His leadership experience extends to positions such as Superintendent and Principal of Tsiya Day School at Zia Pueblo, Chief of Staff and Assistant Superintendent for Rio Rancho Public Schools, and Human Resources Director with Cooperative Educational Services.

Currently, he contributes as an Educational Consultant, advising administrators, coaching educators, and serving as a hearing officer. Additionally, Mr. Tripp advocates for leadership development through Cooperative Educational Services and serves as a School Board Member for Rio Rancho Public Schools.

Through his multifaceted career, Mr. Tripp has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to fostering educational excellence and inspiring the next generation of leaders.

Mr. Tripp’s wife, Jeannette, also received her BA and MA from NMHU, further solidifying their strong ties to the university. Together, they have raised two daughters, Delia Ann and Gayle, and are proud grandparents to four grandchildren: Dylan, Mathis, Shea, and Norah.

As a member of the NMHU Board of Regents, Mr. Tripp draws on his extensive experience in education to advocate for policies that enhance access to and quality of higher education. He believes in the transformative power of education and is dedicated to creating opportunities that empower students to succeed and contribute meaningfully to their communities and the state.
