A former New Mexico Highlands president has been appointed to take the reins of the university’s fund raising.Sharon Caballero served as the university’s president from 2002 to 2004 before becoming the executive director for the Las Vegas San Miguel Economic Development Corporation and the Las Vegas city manager. She began her position of executive director for advancement at Highlands March 30. “This is a great opportunity to serve the university I love,” Caballero said. “There’s a lot of rebuilding we plan to do with the university’s foundation, which helps supply important scholarships for many deserving students at Highlands.” Highlands President James Fries said Caballero’s knowledge of the university, the community and alumni will help build important programs. “She has the right skill set for friend and fund raising, and I am pleased she is willing to take on this new role at Highlands,” Fries said. Caballero earned her doctorate in educational leadership at United States International University, her master’s in secondary education from United States International University, and her bachelor’s degree in journalism and English at San Diego State University. The New Mexico Highlands Foundation, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the support of New Mexico Highlands University. Its purpose is to solicit, receive, and manage funds contributed by individuals, corporations, and foundations for the benefit of the university and its students.
