Las Vegas, N.M. – Prospective college students can learn about career opportunities related to fields of study and more at College and Career Night 2019 on Oct. 16 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Las Vegas.

New Mexico Highlands University and Luna Community College are sponsoring the 21st Annual College and Career Night. It will be in Highlands’ John A. Wilson Complex at 1241 9th St. It is free and open to the public.

“College and Career Night is a great opportunity for Highlands, Luna and the Las Vegas community to showcase their diverse college and vocational experiences,” said Jane Clark, campus visit specialist in the Highlands Admissions Office. “Our hope is that both potential students and their parents gain exposure to all the professional options available to them locally.”

Clark said students will have the chance to meet with faculty and staff from both institutions and explore their career interests. A diverse group of local businesses from first responders to auto mechanics and successful entrepreneurs will also be on hand.

“Our goal is for students in attendance to learn what college and different career options have to offer. The future belongs to them,” Clark said.

Financial aid staff from Highlands and Luna will be available to share information about the financial aid process.

“We’ll have a computer lab open to help parents and their students apply for FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Parents need to have their 2018 tax return information with them to complete this process,” Clark said.

The U.S. Department of Education’s FAFSA website is at www.fafsa.ed.gov. FAFSA opens Oct. 1, 2019.

“In a campus-wide effort to boost enrollment at Highlands, for the second year at College and Career Night, Highlands is waiving the $25 admissions application fee effective until Nov. 1,” Clark said.

College and Career Night includes information tables for Highlands University and Luna Community College, as well as programs and services for students. In addition, local businesses and services will be showcasing their career options.

JC’s New York Pizza Department will be catering the event. Each student participant receives a free T-shirt.
