The New Mexico Highlands Concert Choir will perform works by one of America’s most distinguished Broadway composers and lyricists for its spring program April 20 at 3 p.m. in Ilfeld Auditorium. directed the program, Singing Sondheim, will include a wide variety of selections from such well known musicals as “Sweeny Todd”, “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” and “Into the Woods”. The program will be directed by André García-Nuthmann, Music Department program director, with Lydia Madrick at the piano.Stephen Sondheim, born March 22, 1930, began piano lessons when he was 7. During his youth, Oscar Hammerstein II, a highly successful Broadway composer and Sondheim’s neighbor, took an interest in Sondheim’s talent and became his mentor. Sondheim went on to become a master of the craft and has been a popular Broadway composer for more than 50 years. Famous for his urbane, witty lyrics, his musical sophistication is considered greater than that of his peers. His works have received a Pulitzer, numerous Grammies and Tonies as well as an Academy Award.The NMHU choir will sing such familiar songs as “Comedy Tonight,” “Send in the Clowns”, and “Not While I’m Around”. Robert Woods, professor of theater, will narrate a medley of selections from “Into the Woods” presented by the Performing Arts Club under the guidance of Joseph Chavez. “Into the Woods” is a show in which characters like Little Red Riding Hood, Jack of beanstalk fame and Cinderella appear, their stories interwoven.The many solos in “Singing Sondheim” will be performed by Kaitlyn Sinclair, Devin Barad, Karliz de Marco, Lisa Cisneros, Joseph Chavez, Marie Tripp, Tiffany Neeley, Stephanie Salas, Jaqueline Gomez, Tom Postlewaite, Betty Thompson, Victoria Evans and Joe Cooney. Cooney is also assistant director, and Evans is choral manager. General admission is $10, and for senior citizens and children under twelve, $5. Students with valid I.D. will be admitted free of charge.
