Convocation Ceremony Welcomes New Freshman

Highlands University welcomed new freshmen Aug. 15 during the Class of 2018 Fall Convocation. Campus and community leaders who welcomed the students included Highlands President Jim Fries, Vice President of Academic Affairs Teresita Aguilar, Las Vegas Mayor Alfonso Ortiz, West Las Vegas Schools Superintendent Gene Parsons, Las Vegas City Schools Superintendent Ruben Cordova, and more. Leon Nestor Bustos, Jr., a Highlands psychology graduate student, delivered the keynote address while Dean of Students Fidel Trujillo spoke during the presentation of the class of 2018. Each student’s name was called as they filed across the stage at Ilfeld Auditorium to shake hands with campus leaders. The Highlands University Jazz Ensemble directed by music professor Edward Harrington performed for the student processional. Merlin Fragua of the Jemez Pueblo Oak Canyon Dancers played flute and drums for the closing, while Tyson Fragua performed the Buffalo Dance.
