Convocation Ceremony Welcomes New Freshmen

Highlands welcomed incoming freshmen Aug. 21 at the “Fall Convocation: Celebrating the Class of 2019” organized by the university’s Office of Academic Affairs, Office of Academic Support, and Dean of Students Office. Campus and community leaders who spoke to welcome the students included Highlands President Sam Minner, Vice President of Academic Affairs Teresita Aguilar, Faculty Senate President Brandon Kempner, Las Vegas Mayor Alfonso Ortiz, West Las Vegas Schools Superintendent Gene Parson, Las Vegas City Schools Superintendent Ruben Cordova, and others. Highlands Student Body President Joseph Domínguez delivered the keynote address, and Dean of Students Fidel Trujillo spoke during the presentation of the class of 2019. Each student’s name was called as they filed across the stage at Ilfeld Auditorium to shake hands with campus leaders. Music professor Andre García-Nuthmann was the piano accompanist and vocal performance music major Karliz De Marco performed the national anthem. The Pueblo Enchantment Dance Group from the Acoma Pueblo performed the Buffalo Dance for the closing blessing.
