New Mexico Highlands University hosted its first annual PRIDE Week, a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community that formed part of the President’s Council on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiative. This event marked a historic milestone showcasing commitment to an inclusive environment where all identities are embraced and respected.

The week-long celebration featured a diverse array of activities culminating in a flag-raising ceremony that symbolized NMHU’s dedication to diversity and inclusion.

The flag will now be raised annually in June, a decision that received approval from both the faculty senate and university leadership.

Highlights included a screening of the film Unicorn Boy, which explores themes of personal gender identity and self-acceptance. Following the screening, a discussion led by Dr. Eric Romero provided an opportunity for attendees to engage in dialogue about the challenges many face while navigating their identities.

Keynote speaker Tracy Michaels, Mr. Trans USA, shared his journey and insights on advocacy within the trans community. His presence served as a reminder of the importance of visibility and representation in the pursuit of equality. Michaels comments emphasized the significance of support: “When we come together, we empower each other to embrace our identities and stand firm against discrimination.”

Faculty, staff, and students united in their efforts to ensure the events were successful, showcasing that inclusivity transcends individual identities. Many expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate in a celebration that served as a statement against ongoing societal challenges.

Dr. Sedillo reflected on the experience: “This event was a demonstration of solidarity in a time when many are feeling vulnerable.” This sentiment was echoed by attendees who appreciated the space created for open dialogue and expression.

Initially met with uncertainty due to storm forecasts, The New Mexico Gay Men’s Chorus performed The Unbreakable Harvey Milk at Ilfeld Auditorium, bringing participants together in a celebration of harmony.

In addition to the concert and film screening, various other activities took place throughout the week. An LGBTQ+ game night organized by HU CARES provided a relaxed environment for students to connect and engage with one another. A door decorating contest encouraged faculty and staff to express their support, creating a colorful display of solidarity across campus.

Looking ahead, Dr. Sedillo is committed to fostering a tradition of education, creating an inclusive environment that celebrates diversity in all its forms.
