Field education is an integral part of social work education. Students in the program are provided an opportunity for applied learning, integrating classroom knowledge to real live situations working with individuals, families, groups, and communities. Our field education program has a vast array of community, government and private agencies that work closely with our faculty in providing students supervision and instruction. More than 300 agencies are affiliated with the school. These agencies act as an extension of the classroom, providing students with the opportunity to work alongside highly qualified social work practitioners. The focus of our program is to reinforce the social work knowledge and values through service delivery and applied learning with the expectation that all students attain an acceptable level of competence necessary for effective social work practice.
Students have the opportunity to work with a wide range of populations and settings. Emphasis is placed on working with the diverse populations of New Mexico in rural and urban settings, which afford students to learn new skills and intervention strategies. Students spend a significant amount time in the program in a field practicum agency, engaging in social work practice applying social work theory to direct practice. The practicum placement setting is individually tailored and determined by the student’s interest, classification and area of concentration in the selected master’s program.
