Highlands University student Jean Paul Mwiseneza of Rwanda speaks at the university’s April 7 ceremony to lower his country’s flag to half-staff in memory of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. This is the fourth year the university’s International Education Center has honored Mwiseneza’s request to lower Rwanda’s flag to mark a bloody four-month time period when many of his extended family were killed, along with an estimated 800,000 to one million Rwandans. Mwiseneza, 30, and his wife, Diana, also of Rwanda, will both graduate from Highlands in May with degrees in computer science. The couple has a three-year-old daughter, Vanessa.
