Highlands University Statement on Hermit’s Peak Fire

The New Mexico Highlands University campus community is saddened by the growing Hermit’s Peak Fire, and we are in communication with the City of Las Vegas and San Miguel County Emergency Management and on standby to provide accommodations to evacuees if the need arises. Highlands University is also ready to accommodate the students and employees at United World College—USA should they need to evacuate.

In the event of further evacuations in communities affected by the Hermit’s Peak Fire, please reach out to the manager of the Office of Emergency Management for San Miguel County, Dennis Esquibel, at 505-617-2149. The official evacuation shelter for the Las Vegas area is located in the Memorial Middle School gym.

Community members interested in providing donations to evacuees can bring supplies directly to Memorial Middle School, located at 947 Old National Road at the intersection of Legion and Old National. You can call ahead at 505-429-0336 to find out more about what is needed. Donations for firefighters are being collected at the Bright Beginnings Child Development Center, located at 2302 Collins Drive. They can be reached at 505-425-2715.
