Research and Scholarship

Dr. Smith is interested in how counselor educators and counselors can measure the impact of their work. Her scholarship began with a focus on wellness, and through the years, she developed expertise in group work and interprofessional practice. During the past several years, she has focused on the psychometrics of assessments for counseling and the identification and support for those with environmental sensitivity temperament (i.e., the Highly Sensitive Person). She was selected to be among the first 20 counselor education, social work, and psychology faculty nationally to participate in a cross-disciplinary research project to develop empirically-supported competencies for graduate students to incorporate clients’ spirituality ethically into mental health work, a grant funded by the John Templeton Foundation.
