Las Vegas Women’s Club Gives $3,000 For Highlands Scholarships

Las Vegas, NM – The Las Vegas Women’s Club presented a check for $3,000 to the New Mexico Highlands University Foundation for scholarships to benefit three Highlands students.This year, the club awarded a $1,500 scholarship to Caroline Leigh Montoya, already a Highlands student, and $750 scholarships each to incoming freshman Felicia Lopez and Faith Romero, both 2008 graduates of West Las Vegas High School. For decades, the Las Vegas Women’s Club has awarded scholarships to academically excellent young women graduating from local high schools as well as non-traditional students who are pursuing their dream of a college degree.  The club’s scholarships are earmarked to benefit Highlands University students.  “All three of these scholarship recipients are exceptionally hard working students who are not only excellent academically but are also very involved in their community,” said Linda Cunningham, president, Las Vegas Women’s Club. “One of our club’s primary goals is to promote education and literacy. Our scholarship program supports that goal.”Joe McCaffrey, interim vice president for advancement/interim executive director of the Highlands University Foundation, said: “These kinds of scholarships have immeasurable social and economic benefits for the students who receive them. As a university, we are very grateful to the Las Vegas Women’s Club for its longtime generosity in awarding scholarships to our students.”  The Las Vegas Women’s Club has nearly 100 years of community service, dating back to 1912, when New Mexico became a state. The club has been active ever since helping local community organizations like Girls Scouts, Somos Familia, Future Farmers of America, Ride to Pride, Habitat for Humanity, New Mexico Special Olympics, and many more. The 28-member Las Vegas club is part of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.  On Oct. 17-18, the Las Vegas Women’s Club will host the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of New Mexico Region 2 annual convention in Las Vegas at the Plaza Hotel.
