Leading Irish Band ‘Slide’ in Concert March 23 in Ilfeld

New Mexico Highlands University presents Slide, a leading Irish band, in concert March 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the university’ historic Ilfeld Auditorium, 900 University Ave.

Slide is known for its unique traditional Irish music that contains powerful contemporary elements. The Irish Times hailed Slide as, “traditional musicians with attitude, with songs that range from soulful and sorrowful to contagiously energetic.”

In 2001, Irish Music Magazine gave Slide the distinction of Best Newcomer for its first release, The Flying Pig. The band released two more albums to critical acclaim, including Harmonic Motion and Overneath.

In 2005, the Arts Council of Ireland tapped the band for the Young Musicwide Award. Celebrated Irish musician-producer Donal Lunny was a judge in this competition.

Slide includes concertina virtuoso Aoogan Lynch, fiddler-guitarist Daire Bracken, mandolin and bouzouki player Mick Broderick, pianist-flautist Eamonn de Barra, and lead vocalist Andrew Murray.

The band has its 1999 roots in southwest Ireland in a town called Bandon. It soon expanded to venues in Dublin and London. After touring in France and throughout Europe, the band gained an international following.

Slide has toured in the U.S. since 2008.
