Leveo and Patricia Sanchez

Margaret McKinney/Highlands University

New Mexico Highlands Board of Regents chairman Leveo Sánchez, right, was honored at the Highlands University Foundation’s Legacy Day April 26. At left is Patricia Marshall Sánchez, his wife of 57 years. Regent Sánchez was honored for his exceptional leadership, vision, and generosity to the university, of which he is a distinguished alumnus. Sánchez’ career was global in reach, including leaderships positions with the Peace Corps, Agency for American Aid, and Head Start.

In 1969, he founded and chaired Development Associates, Inc., an international consulting firm specializing in social and economic development. For 36 years, his firm worked in the United States and more than 120 countries. A new biographical film, Sánchez International: a Legacy of Foreign and Domestic Service, screened at Legacy Day. The film also highlighted the life of Sánchez’ mother, Victoria de Sánchez, for whom the Teacher Education Center is named. She was an internationally recognized education pioneer, and a Highlands alumna and education professor. Tom McDonald wrote and directed the film, and media arts graduate Arianna Andreatta was the videographer.
