Las Vegas, NM – New Mexico Highlands University music faculty Linda King and Andre Garcia-Nuthmann will present a concert, Lyrical Passion, Oct. 7 at 3 p.m., featuring the music of Schumann, Brahms and Franck.
King, a concert pianist, and Garcia-Nuthmann, a tenor vocalist, will be joined by Krzysztof Zimowki, a violinist who is the concertmaster for the New Mexico Philharmonic and the Opera Southwest Orchestra.
The concert will be in the university’s historic Ilfeld Auditorium, 900 University Ave. Tickets are $5 and students with ID are free.
“The music for the concert is extremely dramatic and passionate, which is typical of 19th century music,” King said. “It’s superb, beautiful and poetic music from three outstanding Romantic period composers.”
The program begins with King performing a piano solo of Robert Schumann’s “Fantasy Pieces Opus 12,” composed in 1837. Selections include In the Evening, Soaring, Why and Whims.
Next, Garcia-Nuthmann will sing Johannes Brahms’ “Gypsy Songs,” composed in 1887 and inspired by Hungarian folk songs. King is the piano accompanist.
The program concludes with Zimowski playing violin for Cesar Franck’s “Sonata for Violin and Piano,” composed in 1886. King plays piano for the piece.
“Zimowski has virtuoso violin technique that is so fitting for this music, which ranges from bold to intimate and lyrical,” King said. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for our community to hear gorgeous violin playing. For me, it’s a treat to be playing again with such a consummate musician.”
King added that this is the first concert to feature the university’s Steinway grand piano after it received a major overhaul, including new hammers, regulation and voicing.
King and Garcia-Nuthmann are both well known to New Mexico music audiences, including numerous concert performances with the Santa Fe Symphony. Both have also performed internationally, including the 2009 Classical Music Festival in Eisenstadt, Austria.
Garcia-Nuthmann directs the university’s choral program in the Department of Music.
Zimowski was born in Wroclow, Poland and is world-renowned. He has performed in Paris, London, Mexico City, Brussels, Belgium, and more. Zimowski was the concertmaster for the Symphony Orchestra of Weikersheim and Bayreuth in Germany.
After moving to the U.S., Zimowski played violin for the Phoenix Symphony, Santa Fe Opera Ochestra, Santa Fe Symphony, and Santa Fe Pro Musica.
