The NMHU Concert Band will kick off the holiday season in Ilfeld Auditorium Nov. 23 at 3 p.m. The Highlands Faculty Brass Quintet and Highlands Marching and Concert Band will perform such favorites as “Sleigh Ride” and “The Christmas Song”, “Semper Fidelis”, and Five pieces by 17th-century composer Anthony Holborne. Modern pieces include “Back in Black”, and John Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love a Bad Name”. The Highlands Faculty Brass Quintet will also perform a variety of numbers in the concert. The quintet is made up of Edward Harrington, Steve Leger, Greg Tyrone, Melody Brooks and Kenneth Mares. “Edward Harrington and I came up with the idea of forming a brass quintet two years ago,” said Greg Tyrone, applied music teacher. “We wanted an opportunity to play music from all periods and styles at a level that would serve as a positive model for our music students and be a recruiting tool to draw students to Highlands University Music Department.” Kenneth Mares, long time Las Vegas band director, and Steve Leger, owner of Love Music, were founding members and continue to be great assets to the group. The group was revived this year with the addition of Melody Brooks on French horn. “We hope to continue to play together for many years.” Tyrone said.The band students have worked hard this year, both marching for football games and taking applied lessons. The music program has applied teachers for flute, violin, gitaron, percussion, piano, clarinet and saxophone and stand up bass. Other applied lessons include composition and voice.Ticket prices are $8 for general public, $5 for seniors, children under 10 years old, faculty and staff and free for students with an ID.
