Media Arts Students’ Work Showcased at Museums and the Web Conference
Three New Mexico Highlands University media arts student projects were showcased at the international Museums and the Web Conference April 14 — 17 in Denver.
“Our media arts students were fabulous ambassadors for Highlands University and impressed everyone they interacted with at the conference,” said Miriam Langer, a media arts professor who chairs the university’s Visual and Performing Arts Department.
One student project featured in the Cultural Technology Showcase session at the conference was created for the Marian Koshland Science Museum in Washington, D.C.
During fall 2009 semester, a team of media arts students was selected to help rebrand the identity for the Koshland Museum. The students designed two Web pages, created an animated Web banner ad, and filmed a virtual tour of the museum for its Web site. They also designed a new a brochure for the museum.
“As a student, I’ve never presented my work at an international conference,” said Veronica Black, a member of the Koshland Museum design team who represented the team at the conference. “It was very motivating, and moving, to present our Koshland Museum project at the conference and receive praise for our work.
“It was intriguing for me as a media arts student to be at the conference and see some of the possibilities for working in museums when I graduate,” Black said.
Other design team members for the Koshland Museum project include graduate students Brandie Carlson and Katie DeLion, and undergraduate Melissa Marquez. The students created their project in media arts professor Andrew Wollner’s Advanced Design Practice II class.
Graduating senior Devyn Dennison presented her documentary film, Indian Rodeo on the Navajo Nation, as part of the Cultural Technology Showcase at the conference. Dennison, a Navajo from Tohatchi, N.M., produced her film during a 2009 internship with the Crownpoint Historical and Cultural Heritage Council.
At the conference, a representative from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian asked Dennison to submit her film for consideration in the museum’s film festival.
Another media arts student exhibit presented as part of the Cultural Technology Showcase at the conference was Paint Out, a virtual graffiti project. Graduate student Leif Percifield and Kara Pajewski, a program graduate, created the project under Langer’s direction.
Paint Out was also part of a select group of multimedia projects on display at the Denver Art Museum for the opening night of the Museums and the Web conference.
