NMHU Society for Human Resource Management Student Chapter Receives Merit Award

Las Vegas, NM—The New Mexico Highlands University Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) student chapter received a 2022-2023 Merit Award Wednesday for providing superior growth and development opportunities to its student members.

The SHRM Student Chapter Merit Award program encourages the development of more effective student chapters and distinguishes outstanding activities and projects. Chapters are recognized based on operations, chapter programming and professional development of members, support of the human resource profession, and SHRM engagement.

“SHRM student chapter members embody the upcoming cohort of HR trailblazers, and it’s vital to highlight their achievements,” SHRM Chief Membership Officer Michael P. Aitken said. “The dedication displayed by New Mexico Highlands University SHRM Chapter underscores that the future of the profession is in good hands. I commend their achievements and their adeptness in cultivating inventive initiatives, growth, and enthusiasm for HR, especially as we steer through evolving work landscapes.”

SHRM student chapters have the opportunity to earn an award based on the number of activities they complete during the merit award cycle, which began May 1, 2022, and ended April 30, 2023.

NMHU SHRM Chapter students participated in a reading group led by Dr. Zollner and organized in partnership with Donnelly Library. The group read Reset: A Leader’s Guide to Work in an Age of Upheaval by Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP, SHRM CEO and SHRM President. The readings were held in Fall 2022 at the Donnelly Library. “Students, faculty, staff, and members of the community attended the readings. This is another way to share knowledge and engage with different groups, including professionals, community members, and students,” said Dr. Melanie Zollner, Assistant Professor in NMHU’s Business Administration department.

Dr. Zollner sponsored Six NMHU SHRM Chapter members to attend the 2023 SHRM New Mexico State Conference in Albuquerque, May 1-2, 2023. All of NMHU’s participating students volunteered to help at the event. NMHU SHRM Chapter members received funding from ASNMHU to attend the Conference.

The NMHU SHRM Chapter was awarded NMHU Club of the Year, and NMHU SHRM Chapter President FY 2022 -2023 Audra Valencia was recognized as Emerging Leader of the Year at the 2023 Student Leadership and Recognition Banquet.
