Gonzales’ said her style is a combination of folk art, surrealism with bold color and simple line. She said she remembers her fascination with the red crayola as a child that evolved into various artistic endeavors. Painting, sculpture, jewelry, music and media arts have woven a pattern throughout her life.”

Gonzales’ paintings and sculptures are included in her show.

“Terry is a returning student who has conquered a multitude of personal challenges to generate this B.F.A. show,” said David Lobdell, a fine arts professor in the university’s Department of Visual and Performing Arts. “One of our goals is for students to turn what they love into art. Terry exemplifies this in her show, which illustrates her love of her Afghan hounds and macaws.”

Gonzales, who is 58, said: “Finishing my B.F.A. was a lifetime goal and a labor of love. The fine arts program at Highlands is like family. It’s been great medicine for me. My B.F.A. also shows my three grown sons that anything is possible.”

Gonzales’ work will be on display at the Burris Hall Gallery through Dec. 18. The Fall Art Show remains through Dec. 17.
