Registration Underway for Summer Spanish Immersion Institute

Las Vegas, N.M. – Registration is underway for the New Mexico Highlands Summer Spanish Immersion Institute that prepares teachers to take the New Mexico bilingual certification La Prueba exam.

The university’s School of Education is presenting the institute May 29 – June 5 on its main campus in Las Vegas, New Mexico.

“Highlands is proud to announce that we will be offering the Spanish Immersion Institute for bilingual educators again with the same high quality of instruction that school districts across the state have come to expect,” said Eva Yerende, the Highlands School of Education professor who chairs the institute committee.

Yerende said the Highlands institute has more than 20 years of successful history in helping prepare New Mexico teachers to pass the rigorous La Prueba exam. Loretta Salazar, Highlands education professor emerita, founded the Summer Spanish Immersion Institute or Programa de Inmersión en Español.

The institute is offered to both undergraduates and graduate students as well as practicing teachers. Participants will earn six hours of Highlands University credit for the Spanish institute.

The cost for the Summer Spanish Immersion Institute is $2,000 and includes tuition, lodging and meals. The registration deadline is May 20 and applications may be completed online at www.surveymonkey.com/r/FHJ9SPY.

“We encourage teachers to contact their school districts to inquire about the possibility of available funds to attend the institute,” Yerende said.

A limited number of stipends based upon financial need will be awarded on a first come first served basis to teachers. The scholarship application is online at www.surveymonkey.com/r/LDJK2CY
