FAQs for Alumni
Isn’t the writing center just for academic writing?
It’s been marketed that way in the past, but we saw an opportunity to extend our support to the community.
What kinds of writing can you help with?
We’re here to help with whatever you’re working on. Here are some examples!
- Creative writing: novels, memoirs, poems, short stories, etc.
- Public writing: letters to the editor, editorials, social media posts, etc.
- Professional writing: resumes, cover letters, statements of purpose, graduate school application materials.
- Personal writing: strategies for keeping journals and diaries; writing letters.
- Writing technologies: word processors like Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
Can I have online sessions?
You’re welcome to schedule a session in whatever format works best for you. We offer on-site sessions in Douglas Hall 115, as well as online sessions on Zoom and email.
What usually happens in a writing center session?
Our sessions are more like conversations about writing where tutors serve as sample audiences. You’ll sit down with one of our tutors, talk about the writing you’re doing, and decide what you want feedback on.
We usually read aloud in sessions so you can hear your own writing as well as see it, but we honor any request not to do so if the subject matter is sensitive or personal.
You’ll get feedback on what you’re doing well as well as what we think you can improve. Then, when the session is over, you can go think about our feedback and decide what changes you’re going to make.
How often can I come to the writing center?
You can have up to 3 sessions per week and 1 per day. This gives you time to think about our feedback and make changes before you come back.
